Thursday's Mattawa shooting suspect's charges upgraded from second to first-degree murder

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, charges against Mattawa resident Juan Miguel Silva Murillo were upgraded to first-degree murder from second-degree murder. Murillo is accused of killing his neighbor Antonio Quiterio Magallon this past Thursday.


According to the Sheriff's Office investigators, Murillo was seen on a home surveillance camera murder Antonio Quiterio Magallon in his property this past Thursday. The detective wrote that the video shows Murillo climbing a pasture fence onto Magallon's property and firing a gun while running toward Magallon, who was spraying weeds in his pasture. The video then shows Murillo continuing to fire the weapon as he stood over Magallon. Investigators counted at least 17 shots fired. Silva then reloaded the gun approximately two to three times before the video shows Murillo walking away.


Murillo was identified by Magallon's family when they reviewed the video footage with investigators. According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, investigators learned the shooting may be related to a dispute between Murillo and Magallon over property and cattle. Silva-Murillo remains in the Grant County Jail in Ephrata with his bail set at $5 million.
