— Berlin, Deutschland (Germany)
From Monday morning, Germany will control several borders due to the spread of the corona virus. France also announced tighter controls in response to German measures.
In the coronavirus crisis, Germany introduced extensive checks and entry bans on the borders with Switzerland, Austria, France, Luxembourg and Denmark on Monday. "For travelers without a good reason to travel, they can no longer enter," said Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) on Sunday evening in Berlin. The decision will take effect on Monday from 8 a.m.
Previously, other EU countries had largely closed borders, including Denmark, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria. France also announced tighter controls in response to German measures.
EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen was extremely worried and warned of replenishment problems with certain products in the supermarket - thousands of truck drivers were already stranded at the borders. "If we don't act now, stores will have difficulty filling their stores with certain products," said von der Leyen in a video posted on Twitter. "At this moment of crisis, it is of the utmost importance to keep our common internal market going."
